Hey guys! Alright so long story short, I've finally decided to right about the mass controversy over the "50 Shades Of Grey" Trilogy, now that the movie is coming out. So here we go...
Honestly, I've read all the books and I didn't find them to all that bad. We must all keep in mind the specific genre it is. It is erotica people. It's supposed to have sex in it. Don't like, don't read. That simple. Now about the whole "Oh that is so wrong". The kink expressed in the book is a kink many people share and I don't see a problem with it, as long as it is consensual. Let us all remember that Anastasia, the main character in the book, WILLINGLY went along with everything Christian did, intill the end. She didn't like something, she left.
I was talking to my mother about it and she expressed the belief that it was whips and chains one page after another untill I explained that actually, the only time they ever had a harsh touch was at the very end when she walked out on him. That descion leads us to the next books of the trilogy where Christian learns to change his ways for the woman he loves.
All in all, the plot line is good considering the genre it was meant to be. The writing itself? Eh, I've read better Fan Fiction by virgins, so yes I'll give you that. But the fact that so many people can criticize this book when it has sold so many copies and, lets be honest, turned on about 80% of them at least, is ridiculous. This is just an issue of people not being comfortable in admitting their own kinks.
Now, with 50 Shades of Grey, many people have been making parody books. I discovered this yesterday when I found out about "50 Shades Of Alice Through the Looking Glass" ....this book was actually the second in the series but it was... eye opening. If you looking for a book to expand your horizons, look no further. I'll say it's pretty promiscuous.
So in that retrospect... 50 Shades of Alice is even worse than the original. And erotica is nothing new, so I don't understand why this certain book is getting all the crap.... that doesn't make sense. There are TONS of books out there just like it. Look up "Chuck Tingle" I freakin dare you.

ReplyDeleteThe reason 50 Shades of Grey is so controversial isn't because of its "erotica" or "kinks", its because 50 Shades passes domestic abuse as romance and BDSM. Here's some evidence of this:

In fact, actual actors of the movie even say they didn't enjoy filming this movie and the actors dislike each other.

There is also an overwhelming anger from people who practice BDSM and say the 50 Shades is a horribly awful, borderline insulting, representation of the practice. You also mentioned that the sex was "consensual". Are we even reading the same book? There were times where Ana revoked the consent or flat out said no and Christian still tried to go for it. Examples of that are in the links above.
Now, I don't know about the other books in the series other than Christian "changes his ways". Now I'm not 100% sure what "ways" that its talking about but either way, the point is that not every abusive relationship ends that way. Not all abusive people suddenly have a change of heart and treat their significant other with full respect. If Christian is no longer a stalker, slight rapist, a person who threatens, and a person who clearly doesn't know what BDSM means by the end of the series then I'll give the author that. However, this book teaches people that if they're in an abusive relationship that they should just wait for it to be better and teaches some people that this is what a romantic relationship should be. That is something I cannot excuse.
The sad thing is that this book is indeed not one of its kind, there are other books that flat out show an abusive relationship and call it "romantic". Hell, the book 50 Shades was a fanfiction of was an abusive relationship too.
So why the mass attention? Why do people like this? Probably because the people who read it doesn't realize how creepy it is. You know those love stories where its like "wow that's so romantic" but when you think about it its actually really strange and creepy? Yeah.
I agree. All in all it's a very un realistic approach. I have been in relationships with people that have been traumatized in one way or another (thankfully that didn't mean I was in an abusive relationship). However, our relationship ended because they couldn't get past their inability to open up to me. All in all, it's been a while since I read the first book because honestly I kinda hated it. We can all agree that Christian Grey is well... a jerk. So, I guess I missed the point of a lot of that non consensual. I'll have to go back and look at it some more, I guess it didn't occur to me the first read through.

By the end of the series, I really think he has changed... the problem is that would never actually happen in real life considering the issues he had. I have read a lot more since my initial review of this book and I am starting to understand more of the backlash.
I believe Ana, the main character is pretty uhhh messed up as well when you look at it.
